Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” is not only considered one of the best films of the year by the trade press and the public – the FILMSTARTS review gave it an excellent 4.5 out of 5 possible stars – but the 3-hour epic about the ‘Father of the Atomic Bomb’ (certainly also fueled by ‘Barbenheimer’) also raised more than 952 million dollars worldwide – and thus sent an extremely important signal. But the box office success was just the beginning.
As of November 22, the film is finally available for home theater – and the hype surrounding the hauntingly told, vastly illustrated epic continues. While you the DVD*the Blu Ray* and that Bluray Steelbook* You can still get it regularly at all major retailers 4K Bluray* of “Oppenheimer” almost sold out everywhere. Not only in the US are the stocks of Amazon, Walmart or Best Buy completely sold out, but in Germany you cannot currently get the 4K version as a standard edition on Amazon, nor in the US Sample book* (or simply via the Marktplaats). At least at Saturn* and MediaMarkt you can currently still order the 4K Blu-ray in this country:

Although third-party providers on online sales portals already charge many times the original price, we warned yesterday against digging particularly deep into the pockets for the film. In view of the latest developments, we would now like to follow up on this again: Because Universal Pictures now has the opposite Deadline confirmed that they are working hard to get the 4K Blu-ray of “Oppenheimer” back on the market in time for Christmas activities – or to supply retailers with supplies.
They are happy with the enormous turnout and are trying to meet demand before the holidays, so that “fans can experience the film at home in the best possible image quality.” You currently have several options to protect the 4K version.
This way you can experience “Oppenheimer” at home in 4K
As mentioned earlier, you can still get the drive from Saturn and MediaMarkt, but you can only ‘pre-order’ it from Amazon – and then you have to wait until the transport giant has the UHD drive back in stock. Over and beyond you can stream the film in 4K on Amazon Prime Video, among others…

…although you have to accept minimal compromises here, as huge amounts of data that fit on a 4K Blu-ray obviously cannot be transferred in streaming. If you look closely, you should definitely see differences here.
It may also be worth taking a look abroad, although it should be noted that imports often do not have a German soundtrack. The 4K Blu-ray of “Oppenheimer” is currently still available from Amazon UK – according to the photo, it even includes a German soundtrack.
“Oppenheimer” in the home cinema: with great attention to detail
FILMSTARTS editor Björn Becher was in Los Angeles on the occasion of the home theater release of ‘Oppenheimer’ to not only take a look behind the scenes of the film with the valuable making-of ‘The Story of Our Time: The Making of Oppenheimer’, but also to take a look behind the scenes of film director Nolan and parts of his crew.
Particularly worth reading is not only the extensive interview with Christopher Nolan, but also the conversation with sound designer Richard King, who talks about, among other things, the adjustments that were made specifically for the home cinema exploitation of ‘Oppenheimer’. Because yes, compared to “Barbie”, which was released in cinemas at the same time, it is not without reason that the Nolan epic took a particularly long time before it appeared in the home cinema…
