Today without commercials on TV: one of the best science fiction films of all time – unforgettable images and absolutely heartbreaking

“AI – Artificial Intelligence” had its origins in the early 1980s. At the time, cinema visionary Stanley Kubrick (“Barry Lyndon”) wanted to make the film based on the short story “Supertoys Last All Summer Long” by Brian Aldiss. But the master director kept postponing the project because he believed that the technical possibilities were not yet advanced enough. Shortly before Kubrick died in 1999, he left the project to his friend Steven Spielberg (“War of the Worlds”) – and “AI” became something of a legacy for the creator of “Shining.”

If you haven’t seen the sci-fi drama starring Haley Joel Osment (“The Sixth Sense”) yet, you can catch it today, November 18, at 8:15 PM on ZDFNeo – without commercial breaks! It’s worth it, because ‘AI’ is not only a masterpiece of its genre, for us the film is also one of the best of all time. If today’s broadcast doesn’t suit you, you can also switch to Paramount+, where the poetic masterpiece is currently available for subscription:

That’s what ‘AI’ is about

David (Haley Joel Osment) looks like a normal boy, but is actually artificial. Nevertheless, it is unique: the first child robot programmed to feel love in a post-climate change catastrophe world. After the polar ice caps melted, habitat became scarce, leading to births being strictly regulated. Intelligent robots partially replace humans.

David is entrusted to the Swinton couple (Sam Robards, Frances O’Connor) to help them overcome the trauma of their son, who has fallen into a coma. But once David is formed, the bond with his new mother is irreversible. When Martin unexpectedly comes back to life, there are problems. David has become practically redundant, which ultimately leads to David being left in the woods.

Unable to realize what has happened, David now has only one goal: to become a real boy to win back his mother’s love. Alongside gigolo robot Joe (Jude Law), suspected of murder, and super toy Teddy, his odyssey takes him to the end of humanity – and beyond…

Spielberg meets Kubrick – that can only be brilliant!

The fact that two geniuses like Stanley Kubrick and Steven Spielberg collaborated (virtually) for ‘AI’ could only produce a masterpiece. In fact, the visually stunning and heartbreaking sci-fi drama also seems like a cross between the two directors: The mix of cool analysis (Kubrick) and dreamy-poetic melancholy (Spielberg) creates a unique artistic alliance that invites wonderbut also ensures that your eyes become quite wet for the first time after half an hour.

In the official FILMSTARTS review, “AI” received the absolute best rating: 5 stars! Our author writes in his review: “’AI’ takes viewers on a fascinating journey to the origins of humanity, ending in the distant future where organic beings exist only in memories. The fact that ‘AI’ works perfectly as a cinematic parable is in no small part due to the extraordinary talent of Haley Joel Osment.”

Yes, “AI” is an enrichment for the heart and mind. So if you haven’t seen the film yet, you should definitely take the chance tonight and use this as an opportunity to see Steven Spielberg’s often underrated but almost entirely groundbreaking work at the turn of the millennium (right now is also to see the beloved “ Minority Report” by the author of these rules). It is worth it ..
