This Ferrari was just auctioned for 46 million francs

A 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO was auctioned in New York for 51.7 million dollars (46.65 million francs).

According to auction house Sotheby’s, this is the second highest amount ever paid for a car at auction. The bright red sports car was owned by a US collector for 38 years before it changed hands on Monday evening. Sotheby’s has not announced the successful bidder.

Only a Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé fetched more money at auction, which sold for around 130 million francs last year, Sotheby’s said. Nevertheless, the price achieved for the Ferrari was below the figure of at least $60 million expected by experts.

The sports car took second place in a 1000 kilometer race at the Nürburgring in Germany. After several races in Italy it was exported to the US in the late 1960s. There the car changed hands several times before it ended up in the hands of a collector from Ohio in 1985, who then sold it. (sda/afp)
