As Austria’s “Kronen Zeitung” recently reported, powerful energy drink maker Red Bull has lost a legal dispute with a Sardinian winemaker. The Italian Ministry of Industry Commission rejected the objection to the registration of the logo with the Italian Patent Office. This puts an end to a legal dispute that flared up earlier this year.
Winemaker Mattia Muggittu, 23, is still allowed to use the Cantina Muggittu winery’s brand. Two oxen facing each other with a red border will continue to decorate wine bottles in the future. At Muggittu’s winery, it is possible to see oxen not only on the wine label, but also when plowing the vineyards.
Viticulture in Sardinia
Dark Cannonau, ahead of even the white Vermentino grape variety, is the most planted grape variety in Sardinia, with an area exceeding 9,000 hectares. Cannonau is the same grape variety as Garnacha in Spain and Grenache noir in France. Cantina Muggittu bottles the red wine IGT Isola dei Nuraghi, which consists exclusively of Cannonau, as is common in Sardinia.
Containing approximately 15.5% alcohol, Muggittu’s red wine is on the heavy side. However, the Cannonau grape variety used is known for its high sugar enrichment, which leads to a correspondingly high alcohol content after alcoholic fermentation. In Sardinia, dry Cannonau red wines are available from the Cannonau grape variety, as well as dessert wines and wines with added alcohol.
