Corippo, Ticino

First, it’s the smallest: The village of Corippo in Ticino’s Verzasca Valley has only twelve people, and with a density of two people per square kilometre, it is one of the most sparsely populated communities in the entire country. The village center of the beautiful Villaggio has been a protected building since 1975 and is considered one of the most beautiful places in Ticino. But since almost no one wants to live in the deserted valley anymore and take care of the village as residents, the old Rustici is currently being transformed step by step into a beautiful accommodation. Fondazione Corippo has set the goal of operating the entire village as a sort of listed open-air hotel in the near future.

Fischingen, Thurgau

In the middle of Thurgau “Tannzapfenland” is the Benedictine monastery of St. Along with Johann is the small community of Fischingen. Vast spruce forests stretch across the rugged terrain around the village. You can enjoy magnificent views of Lake Constance from certain points. In general, it is a good idea to take your hiking boots with you before heading to the canton of Most: Fischingen is not only the highest and southernmost municipality in Thurgau, but also the largest in terms of surface area. Anyone who wants to walk, cycle or trek in this village of 2,700 people will get their money’s worth.

3

Vercorin, Valais

Around 600 residents live in the sun-baked wooden facades of old Valais chalets that characterize the Vercorin cityscape. The village is located at the entrance to the hiking paradise of Vallon de Réchy and, in winter, is the starting point of the Val d’Anniviers ski area. From Vercorin in spring you can take wonderful walks along the old water pipes that farmers used to irrigate their fields, which are still preserved here.

4

Monstein, Grisons

The village of Monstein, with a population of 180 people, is a classic old Walser village. Many of the beautiful houses are built from local wood, and in some you can still admire the traditional larch tiles. Monstein is located at 1,620 meters above sea level on a sunny terrace in Graubeğen. There are ten village wells and two churches in the village. However, today the old one is no longer used for rituals or as a fire department magazine as it was at that time, but opens its doors to all kinds of cultural and political events.

5

Grandvillard, Freiburg

Goats, cows, cheese and beautiful historic houses: that’s how Grandvillard in the canton of Fribourg sums up. 812 people live here and together they guard one of the country’s last secrets: the recipe for quality Gruyère. The village cows provide the milk for bitter cheese. And they feed themselves in the green meadows between the old barns. Cows have little interest in beautiful Gruyere-style houses or the beautiful La Daoulaz chapel. Old buildings delight many visitors who come here.

6

Santa Maria, Grisons

The road passing through the village of Santa Maria in Val Müstair is so narrow in some places that the mail bus from Zernez to the magnificent remote valley has to go “millimeter” in places to avoid scratching the yellow paint on the old stone facades. Santa Maria not only impresses with its magical location, but also attracts visitors with its hand-weaving studio Manufactura Tessandra and – astonishingly – the world’s smallest whiskey bar. More than 280 types of whiskey are served here, including one made exclusively with Val Müstair’s ingredients.

Trub, Bern

The municipality of Trub BE won the competition “The most beautiful village in Switzerland 2019”. 37,700 people voted to name the idyllic village in Oberemmental BE the jewel of the nation. If you want to feel like Heidi, you’ve come to the right place. Surrounded by numerous viewpoints, the farming community offers many hiking opportunities.
