The variety of plant-based milk alternatives has increased significantly in recent years. However, almost all alternatives have lower nutritional and protein content than cow’s milk. Barbara Walther, 59, published the results of a study this week. He serves as group leader for sensory and aroma analysis at Agroscope, the federal competence center for agricultural research, and says: “The quality of proteins in animal milk is higher than in plant-based alternatives. The composition of carbohydrates also varies greatly.” In general, all plant-based beverages have a lower energy density than cow’s milk. In other words: a glass of plant-based beverage provides less energy than a glass of cow’s milk.
According to Agroscope research, the performance of the five most popular milk alternatives is as follows:
one
soy milk
According to research, soy milk is closest to conventional milk. The protein content is the same, and the average content of vitamins B1, B9 and E is even higher than milk. The iron and magnesium content of soy milk is also twice as high as cow’s milk. However, since it contains less fat and carbohydrates, it provides less energy.
Recommended consumption: It is suitable for consumers of all age groups.
2
almond milk
According to Agroscope, almond milk has the highest vitamin B12 content of all milk substitutes. “This is because they are often enriched with vitamin B12,” says Walther. However, the nutritional content and protein quality of almond drinks are relatively low. “We are less able to use these proteins to build muscle than animal proteins,” Walther says.
Consumption recommendation: Almond milk is not a suitable alternative to cow’s milk for children up to three years of age and people over 65 years of age due to its low protein quality.
3
cashew milk
Cashew milk has a high fat content similar to cow’s milk. It contains a lot of complex carbohydrates. The proteins contained in cashew milk are of high quality. Cashew milk also contains plenty of selenium, magnesium, iron and zinc, according to Walther. These chemical elements play important roles in various metabolic functions as components of many proteins and enzymes.
Consumption recommendation: Suitable for consumers of all age groups.
4
rice milk
According to a study, rice milk provides more energy than any other plant-based beverage. “Because it contains a lot of carbohydrates,” says Walther. But rice milk had the lowest protein content of all the drinks tested. It is also low in fat and nutrients.
Consumption recommendation: Rice drinks are not a suitable milk alternative for children up to three years old and people over 65 years of age, as their protein content is very low.
5
oat milk
Oat milk is popular but, according to research, is low in protein, fat, vitamins, minerals and protein. Oat milk also has the highest sugar content of all plant-based beverages.
Recommended consumption: Oat milk is not a suitable milk alternative due to its low nutritional profile.
