UK-based Irish actor Michael Gambon, known for his role as Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter film saga, among other things, has died aged 82 after suffering from pneumonia, his family said on Thursday.
“We are saddened to announce the loss of Michael Gambon,” said a statement released by his publicist Clair Dobbs on behalf of his wife Anna Miller and son Fergus.
“Dear husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital accompanied by his wife Anna and son Fergus, after the outbreak pneumonia. Michael was 82 years old,” the message reads.
The family asks that their privacy be respected and appreciates the messages of “love and support.”
Winner of four Baftas awardsGambon is known for his extensive career of more than five decades in TVcinema, radio and theater.
In recent years, he has become popular among young audiences playing the headmaster of Hogwarts, Albus Dumbledore, in six of the eight Harry Potter films, a character created by the British author. JK Rowling.
He played the great magician, recognizable by his long beard, between 2004 and 2011, after replacing the deceased Richard Harris.
Gambon, who lived outside London, is known in the UK for playing French detective Jules Maigret in the ITV series “Maigret” and for the lead role in the BBC Public Broadcaster series “The Singing Detective”.
Born on October 29, 1940 in Dublin, Gambon made his debut at landscape in the production of “Othello” at the Gates Theater in the capital of Ireland, and already in Englandhe was part, with Laurence Olivier, of the founding team National Theatre Londoner.
Some of his film roles were movies such as “The King’s Speech” in 2010, “Gosford Park” in 2001 and “Victoria & Abdul” in 2017.
In 1998, Queen Elizabeth II knighted Michael Gambon for his contribution to the world showwho gave it the “Sir” treatment.
