“Dream Scenario” starring Nicolas Cage opens the 19th Zurich Film Festival.

One of Germany’s biggest film festivals is taking place in Zurich for the 19th time. The program is full of films from all over the world. Our highlights:

one

dream scenario

Zurich Film Festival opens with Nicolas Cages’ film “Dream Scneario”. The film contains plenty of dark humor and can be seen in the public program as well as at the closed opening event. Cage represents Paul Matthews, the family man who one day appeared in the dreams of millions of people and turned into a star literally overnight. Soon the new celebrity takes a nightmarish turn.

2

maestro

One of the biggest movie expectations of this year. Bradley Cooper not only directs “Maestro,” he also stars as conductor and composer Leonard “Lenny” Bernstein. Celebrating his worldwide success with his works “West Side Story” and “In Town”, “West Side Story” continues to be one of the most famous stage works of today. But behind the happy face of a successful artist lives a man who cannot accept his homosexuality, which is a test for his marriage to his wife Felicia, played by British actress Carey Mulligan.

3

stupid money

Australian director Craig Gillespie is no stranger. For example, he recently directed Disney’s “Cruella” starring Emma Stone and Emma Thompson. He was also responsible for the Oscar drama “I, Tonya,” in which he starred opposite Margot Robbie and Allison Janney. “Dumb Money” follows a group of ordinary people who stage an unexpected coup on Wall Street. The screwball comedy stars Shailene Woodley, America Ferrera, Seth Rogen, Paul Dano and Sebastian Stan in front of the lens; Hollywood guaranteed.

4

fair play

A recommendation for fans of captivating, psychological thrillers. Director Chloe Domont’s debut feature focuses on gender dynamics, power games and jealousy. Protagonists Emily and Luke are a happy couple, despite the fact that they work at the same company, which strictly prohibits relationships between employees. The couple’s harmony is disrupted when one of them is unexpectedly promoted.

5

How to have sex?

Filmmaker Molly Manning Walker also has her feature film debut. Questionable expectations about female sexuality are at the center of the story of three young women who go on a borderless holiday in Greece. After the initial enthusiasm, the three women realize that their demands for sun, parties, clubs and alcohol are not met as they wish by their surroundings.

6

Flying Class

There are highlights for little movie fans, too. One of these is the new adaptation of Erich Kästner’s film “The Flying Classroom”, starring Hannah Herzsprung and Tom Schilling, which will premiere at the Zurich Film Festival. A colorful adventure that will delight young and old.

7

Birthday girl

The 18th birthday cruise is expected to be the highlight of Cille’s coming of age. Single mother Nanna has big plans and a great time on board is inevitable. But on the first evening, a dreamy journey turns into a nightmare when an attack occurs – or does it? Celebrating its world premiere at ZFF, the Danish psychological thriller continues to fascinate the audience until the end, with countless twists and turns, thriller cinema at its best.

8.

a whole life

Adapted from the novel of the same name by Austrian writer Robert Seethaler, director Hans Steinbichler tells the story of Andreas, an orphan boy who comes to a remote valley in Tyrol at the beginning of the 20th century. He grows up on his uncle’s farm, where he is used as cheap labour, starts a cable car building business, and lives in seclusion in a wooden hut in the Tyrolean mountains. One day, when he meets Marie, he experiences for the first time a feeling he was unfamiliar with before: Love. Will his love carry him through his whole life? “A Whole Life” is a beautiful story about what is truly important in life. Accompanied by images of a magnificent natural backdrop.

9

Priscilla

Star director Sofia Coppola is directing the movie biopic “Priscilla,” which stars Cailee Spaeny as the title character and Jacob Elordi as the King of Rock, Elvis Presley. The biography tells the tragic story of love and pain of one of the most famous couples in history.

10

salt burn

Jacob Elordi fans are getting double the bang for their buck. Besides “Priscilla”, he can also be seen in “Saltburn”. In the drama, directed by Oscar-winning director Emerald Fennel, he stars as the son of an eccentric British aristocratic family who invites his introverted student colleague (Barry Keoghan) to the family estate in Saltburn for the summer. A summer neither of them will soon forget.

11th

Stella. One life.

The historical drama follows the life of Stella Goldschlag, a Jew who worked as an informant for the Gestapo during World War II and, as a so-called “looter”, tracked down Jews in hiding and handed them over to their oppressors. . The leading role is played by Paula Beer, who won the Young Actor Award at the Venice Film Festival in 2016 for her role in the movie ‘Frantz’.
