When the management published the online advertisement of Nathalie Schneider’s (24) apartment in mid-August, calls came one after another on her mobile phone.
The young woman could have saved 200 francs for an apartment advertisement. “I didn’t think there would be so much interest in my apartment in this location. “Who knows about Schleinikon,” says a child care specialist at a nursery. Interested parties even offered him money for his rental apartment.
Restrictions and other options for those seeking accommodation
The rural community is not a particularly desirable place for those looking for a place to stay. However, due to the lack of affordable housing, the number of people looking for housing is increasing and they are moving from cities to more remote residential areas outside the preferred residential areas.
Anyone looking for an apartment is increasingly forced to expand the search radius and accept additional routes and other restrictions; Even in very rural areas, the supply of apartments has long been in short supply.
This is also illustrated by the example of Nathalie Schneider from Schleinikon ZH. The small community of Zurich Unterland has approximately 900 inhabitants. It is a 20-minute drive from the city limits of Zurich and approximately 15 minutes from Baden AG. There is neither a train station nor shopping opportunities in the village. The S-Bahn to Zurich runs every half hour, and the only postal bus to Baden runs from the neighboring municipality Niederweningen ZH. Still, about 30 people showed interest in Schneider’s cheap apartment.
Your own first affordable apartment
For Schneider, the lack of shopping opportunities and limited public transportation were no problem. As a first-time tenant, he enjoyed living in the new apartment for two years. Over time, the only thing that bothered him was the noise of the main street. «This was my first apartment of my own. I like these and the price is reasonable. “I also wanted to live near my family, I play football nearby and I also grew up in the countryside,” says the 23-year-old.
The monthly net rent for his modern 2.5-room apartment with its own washing machine and dryer is 1,160 francs, plus 125 francs of incidentals and garage space. Schneider is moving back to his parents’ house, also in Wehntal, because he wants to save money for a longer trip and language course next summer. So he canceled the apartment without notice.
Mixed interested parties in display
Schneider arranged only one viewing appointment with those interested and invited everyone to his home in Schleinikon on a Saturday. “Young people and old people came, and there was a couple too,” he says.
Schneider knows from some interested parties to whom he gave registration forms to the administration that they have been looking for apartments for a long time and have been rejected several times.
Lease agreement for new tenants in very short time
Two days later, the apartment advertisement was removed from publication again by the administration and the apartment was allocated. The young man, who has been looking for a home for a long time, will move to the apartment he rented in Schleinikon as Schneider’s new tenant.
For the nursery worker, this now means selling some of the furniture, packing the last boxes, moving them, finishing cleaning the flat and then handing over the furniture to its happy heir.
