The news of the death at the age of 96 of Tony Bennett, one of the most successful and beloved singers of jazz and popular music, saddened the art world, and today musicians of all styles and ages said goodbye to the singer on their social networks.
Columbia Records, the record company that signed Bennett in 1950, said today: “Tony’s timeless voice, charm, warmth, soul and spirit changed the world and illuminated the lives of millions during his 73-year career.”
In his long journey Bennett sang with various artistslike Barbra Streisand, Elton JohnStevie Wonder, ConnectionLady Gaga, among many others.
Elton John posted a photo of the two on his instagram and in the title described Bennett as: “the classiest singer, man and performer”.
Colombian singer Juanes – who sang with him “The Shadow of Your Smile”on the album “Duets. An American Classic’- indicated in their networks that Bennett is “a being of light, generous and extremely talented.”
“The best memories of Mr. Tony Bennett, including the tape of his singing lessons he gave me, will live with me forever,” Juanes added on Twitter.
Even musicians so out of style Gene Simmonsthe KISS bassist recognized him by saying: “Today we lost an icon of icons. Kind, considerate and, as (Frank) Sinatra said, the best singer.”
Bennett was diagnosed Alzheimer’s disease 2016, but continued to perform and record until 2021.
His last appearance was in August 2021, when he appeared alongside him Lady Gaga -with whom he released two albums- at Radio City Music Hall in New York in a show called “One Last Time”.
New York dresses in mourning
The son of an Italian merchant, Anthony Dominick Benedetto was born on August 3, 1926 in the Astoria neighborhood of New York Queens. I study in High school of art and industry in Manhattan, where he discovered his two passions, music and painting.
It was also given today by the political representatives of New York tribute.
Big Apple Mayor Eric Adams tweeted, “Tony Bennett, a working class kid from Queens, sang our song to the world.”
“Don’t let the lyrics fool you: He left his heart here in New York,” the mayor said, referring to the most successful song Bennett’s, “I left my heart in San Francisco”.
For her part, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a tweet that “Bennett’s story was a New York story,” and former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who is also Italian-American, tweeted that the singer “A New Yorker in the truest sense of the word“.
