If anyone embodied Parisian chic, it was 1970s actress Jane Birkin († 76) – despite the style icon being British by birth. More iconic than the French laissez-faire style was his love of the woven wicker basket. The simple wicker basket became his trademark. While the bag has always been a classic in France, the rest of the world needed time to discover the everyday item as a fashionable trend piece.

In the summer of 2017, “Birkin Basket” was highly appreciated in Europe for the first time. Influencers like Julie Sarinana (@sincerelyjules) or Vanessa Hong (@thehautepursuit) no longer carried expensive designer bags but simple wicker baskets from small independent fashion brands.

The it-piece can now be found in every fashion house. Those who can afford it will be happy with luxury brands like Dolce & Gabbana or Prada. But inexpensive brands like Zara or Topshop also offer a variety of new interpretations of the “Birkin Basket”. Whichever model you choose, the only thing that matters is that nothing goes better with a wicker basket than the undoubted composure of the French.
