This “comet” has struck: the impact of Udo Lindenberg and Apache 207 chases from record to record. As shown in the official German charts, “Komet” is now Germany’s longest-running German-language number one hit.
The song tops the chart for the 17th time, replacing the Matthias rhyme hit “Verdammt – ich lieb’ dich” at number one with 16 weeks. The song was number one for 16 weeks in 1990, the year of reunification.
Unlike Lindenberg and Apache, the rhyme was unbroken then. Four weeks this year, Ski Aggu, Joost and Otto Waalkes conquered the lead with the song “Friesenjung”. However, Lindenberg and Apache remained in second place the entire time – lurking, so to speak.
In all, only two other songs also charted 17 times: Boney M.’s disco classic “Rivers Of Babylon” and Luis Fonsi feat Daddy Yankee’s 2017 summer hit “Despacito”. The coming week beckons a new record for the Lindenberg-Apache duo: the sole leader of the single charts.
In a brief statement, Lindenberg was excited about the newfound success: “Yeahhh. Wow. Who would have thought…absolutely flashed.” His rapping colleague Apache 207 explains the newfound triumph: “It’s nice to see ‘Komet’ several unites generations and can therefore achieve this success. We are overwhelmed and thrilled that our music can make such a difference.”
“Komet” was released in January 2023 and has been in the top two charts continuously for 25 weeks. For comparison in terms of German-language number one hits: major German top titles last year were, for example, the summer hit “Layla” by DJ Robin & Schürze, which was number one for nine weeks. In 2007, “A star (… that bears your name)” by DJ Ötzi and Nik P. remained in first place for eleven weeks.
If you go further back in chart history, you will come across long-lived German-language number one hits such as “Polonäse Blankenese” by Gottlieb Wendehals (nine weeks in 1981/82), “Jenseits von Eden” by Nino de Angelo (eight weeks 1984 ) or “A Little Peace” by Nicole (five weeks 1982).
Interesting: “Atemlos (through the night)” by Helene Fischer never became a number 1 hit in Germany. In 2014, the statistics show third place as the highest position five times.
