In a lawsuit filed in California state court, three plaintiffs allege that Open AI used their book to train artificial intelligence (AI) without their consent. Works are protected by copyright.
Silverman and writers Christopher Golden and Richard Kadrey also sued Facebook’s parent company Meta. Here, too, the accusation is that their work has been used to develop artificial intelligence. The lawyers said that the material used by OpenAI and Meta was “copied from copyrighted works, including plaintiffs’ books, without permission, attribution, and compensation by OpenAI and Meta.”
When developing artificial intelligence, large amounts of data are evaluated to train programs. Meanwhile, the authors’ complaints against this approach are growing. Success in court may limit the ability of tech companies to develop artificial intelligence.
OpenAI declined to comment on the case when asked by the AFP news agency. Meta initially did not respond to a request.
