Puerto Rican singer and songwriter Luis Fonsi will be the godfather of the Norwegian Viva, a new cruise line that the company will open on November 28 and will have San Juan (Puerto Rico) as its home port, for seven-day itineraries through the Caribbean.
The artist told EFE that baptism is a maritime tradition “beautiful” and that he feels very “privileged” to be the godfather of the cruise, especially because he grew up in Puerto Rico, near the sea.
He stated that he was happy that he did Norwegian Viva he will use San Juan, his country, as a base port, and he invited everyone to the island because “they will celebrate music, eat delicious food, learn something about a loving history, they will welcome him with a hug.”
Fonsi will sing on the new ship and name it during a ceremony that will also include Paulina Rubio, Pedro Capó and “Saturday Night Live” actor Marcello Hernández, Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) announced Friday.
Five-time winner Latin Grammy will sponsor Viva, the second of six Prima-class vessels, with a design that includes more open spaces, thus in keeping with the ancient maritime tradition of blessing and christening these ships.
“When you think about cruising, you think about happy times, about making memories, I think about my family, about music,” Fonsi said.
“The fact that the ship is tied to my country and to the city that I love very much, which is my second home, which is Miami, where I live, it seemed to me that everything went together,” he added.
After completing his journey by being baptized, Norwegian Viva It will be the newest ship to base in San Juan, arriving on December 15.
“Miami, our hometown, is steeped in Latino culture and we want to celebrate the debut of Norwegian Viva with an infusion of Latino talent led by Luis,” said David J. Herrera, president of the Florida-based cruise line.
He emphasized that as a Puerto Rican, based in Miami, Fonsi “brings people together from all over the world with his energy, positivity and music, making him the perfect complement to the vibrant energy of Norwegian Viva.”
The cruise line will offer a variety of seven-day Caribbean itineraries through April 2024, calling at Tortola (British Virgin Islands), St. John’s (Antigua), Bridgetown (Barbados), Castries (St. Lucia), Philipsburg, St. Martin and St. Thomas (US Virgin Islands).
From there, she will return for the summer cruise season in Europe from Athens and Piraeus (Greece), Lisbon (Portugal) and Rome and Venice (Italy).
NCL noted that in addition to the more spacious design of the new cruise ships, the Prima Class highlights world-class dining and stellar on-board activities, including the three-level Viva Speedway.
Among others, it has Indulge Food Hall, a modern restaurant with eleven unique dining options; the fastest slides at sea The Drop and The Rush and the sustainable cocktail bar Metropolitan.
NCL has a fleet of 18 state-of-the-art ships sailing to 400 destinations, including Great Stirrup Cay, the company’s private island in the Bahamas, and the Harvest Caye resort in Belize.
