This is a paid post brought to you by Davos Klosters.

Suddenly he had more time to have fun: Dario Cologna, 37, came to life as a cross-country skier a year after retiring as a top athlete. “It was a change,” he says. “Professional and privately, with new exciting tasks like commenting on SRF, new ambassador roles or projects in the youth field,” he says. “But because I don’t travel a lot or I’m busy with continuing education, I have more time options than before.”

Time he loves to spend with his family, wife Laura (33) and son Leano (2). For example, on a trip to Davos Klosters, where he lived and is now more or less getting to know. The well-executed and increasingly popular combination of “cycling and walking” is ideal for this, especially in the resort area of Graubünden. Among them: Dario Cologna. “With Bike & Hike, I perceive my environment much more intensely and consciously than in my active career,” he says. “I was totally focused on my roller-skiing, racing bike or running shoe training and didn’t have time to stop and enjoy the scenery or nature in too many beautiful places.”

“The advantage of the bike is that you can reach the end of the side valleys much faster than you would on foot,” says Dario Cologna.

“Bike & Hike” as a casual combination

Now it’s making up for it. Cologna prefers to bike to a side valley with family and bike trailer and take a small hike with a child carrier backpack if you feel like it. “These are excellent family outings,” says the four-time Olympic champion. He likes to sit on a bench for five minutes, rest on a large rock or cool his feet in a mountain stream. “It’s these little moments that excite me.”

“Bike & Hike” is a casual combination. «The advantage of the bicycle is that you can reach the end of the side valleys much faster than walking. And instead of taking the public transport bus, you are actively moving in nature.” The advantage of walking is that you can reach places that are difficult to reach by bike. “These are, for example, the two SAC cottages Grialetsch in Davos or Silvretta in Klosters.” And finally, a bike ride into the valley is the crowning glory. While every move is good for physical fitness, “Bike & Hike” for Cologna does not focus on the sporty component. “For me, above all, it should be fun. Taking a break at a cozy mountain restaurant is part of that.»

Since retiring, Dario Cologna has been enjoying spending more time in his spare time.

These are the best routes

One thing is for sure: the range in Davos and Kloster is vast for this delightful combination of cycling and walking. Both places have many side valleys that can be reached in a short time by bicycle from the respective village centers and are immediately surrounded by calm nature. “Each side valley has its own charm,” says Cologna. “Everything is there, from lush green meadows to forests to open high mountain terrain. Additionally, it is easy for cyclists of all levels to reach the side valleys. No complex driving techniques are required, as you can mainly drive on mountain roads (tar or gravel).»

Routes offered include, for example, just under two hours by bike from Davos Platz to Sertig Pass, two and a half hours walking and an additional hour cycling/hiking. Or the Grialetschhütte tour, which consists of an hour and a half by bike, three hours by walking and 45 minutes by bike.

What is Dario Cologna’s favorite piece? “Every tour has its own character,” he says. “But if I had to set a route, I would go from Klosters to Alpine Sardasca at the end of the Monbiel side valley. From there it is an hour’s walk to the Seetalsee. Complete seclusion awaits you there, including cooling off in the mountain lake!» This route also has a special treat: the syrup bar in Alp Sardasca.
