Today on TV: From 16 or from 18? Thankfully, the FSK has changed its mind again in this gruesome action thriller!

If the FSK had stuck to its original October 2017 decision, ProSieben would have had to start or cut the film ten minutes later tonight. After all, films with an FSK 18 can only be shown on German free TV after 11 p.m. But sometimes it happens that the FSK later changes its mind again – for example, legendary for “American Beauty”, which was upgraded from an age rating of 12 years to 16 years after protests, even after the official theatrical release.

In the case of “American Assassin”, it was the other way around. After the action thriller actually got an FSK 18 on the first try (probably due to the morally more than questionable methods of the CIA agents in the movie), In the second run, the voluntary self-restraint then pushed the FSK out of the age of 16, which the German rental company was aiming for. For Hollywood mainstream thrillers, an FSK 18 is now also absolutely unusual (while there were still such high ratings or indexes in the 1980s and 1990s).

But in any case: Thanks to the FSK 16, “American Assassin” will run absolutely uncut on ProSieben tonight from 10:50 p.m. And if you don’t have the time or don’t feel like TV commercials in general, the movie is also available on Amazon Prime Video:

That’s what “American Assassin” is about

“American Assassin” from “Homeland” director Michael Cuesta tells the story of Mitch Rapp (Dylan O’Brien), whose girlfriend was killed by terrorists shortly after he proposed marriage while on vacation at the beach. In order to take personal revenge, the young man takes a job as an assassin with the tough and notorious CIA veteran Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton).

After an intense and ruthless training, the duo are assigned to investigate a series of terrorist attacks. They encounter the mysterious Ghost (Taylor Kitsch), who seems to always be a crucial step ahead of them…

One of the biggest cinema flops of 2017!

By the time of his death, best-selling author Vince Flynn had written 13 novels about counter-terrorist Mitch Rapp. So there would have been (more than) enough material to develop ‘American Assassin’ – as originally planned – into a mega thriller franchise. But, as we know, nothing came of it – which is only logical: even though “American Assassin” was produced on a modest budget of only $ 35 million, the worldwide earnings of about $ 66 million are probably just enough for cover production costs and marketing costs. These are certainly not numbers to build a successful franchise…

And there really were plenty of warning signs of failure: After all, several well-known directors and authors (including Antoine Fuqua and Edward Zwick) have tried the material for years in vain – until 2016 it suddenly had to be done very quickly, otherwise the rights to the books to the heirs of the author would have fallen behind. The result feels generic and rushed – even if the movie goes for a mainstream thriller in some really dark places.
