Have you ever been so impressed with art that you forgot time and your mouth fell open? Are you imagining this at night and looking back after this experience? You will definitely feel the same when you go to Art Basel and look at the free installation of Turkish-American artist Refik Anadol (38) at the Theater Basel.

The oversized video installation is called “Glacial Dreams”, it’s gorgeous and overwhelming. You can stand in it, so to speak, and you are “in” everywhere, above and below. “Inside” means: surrounded by a multi-sensory video installation consisting not only of sound and often fascinating motion picture material, but also of scent elements. With the help of artificial intelligence, Anadol analyzed and alienated thousands of glacier images, some of which he produced, and some from archives around the world.

Artificial intelligence provides overwhelming beauty

The artist and designer is one of the pioneers and world’s most important representatives of digital, artificial intelligence-assisted art, employing nearly a dozen people in his studio. He lives in Los Angeles today, was born in Istanbul. In his first major installation in 2015, he “painted” with digital data, so to speak. She has been invited to many international biennials and art fairs and won numerous awards. One of his installations was shown at the Museum of Modern Art.

His latest installation pays homage to the life-giving, temperature-regulating, and critically endangered world’s glaciers. This setup makes you painfully aware of how fragile the ice that was once meant to last forever really is.

But the main thing is that the installation is overwhelmingly beautiful – so it’s worth going to Art Basel just for that. Even if you don’t usually have much interest in modern art.

«Glacier Dreams» until Sunday, 18 June at Theater Basel, Theaterstrasse 7, Basel
