Champagne is the essence of a quality sparkling wine. No beverage reflects a country’s well-being better than champagne. Measured by average wealth per capita and gross domestic product, Switzerland has been at the top of the rankings for years. Therefore, the recently published champagne sales figures were eagerly awaited.

The result for 2022 is overwhelming: about 6.4 million bottles of champagne were sold in Switzerland last year, corresponding to a turnover of around 145 million francs. For comparison: In 2013 there were 91 million bottles of champagne in Switzerland, an increase of almost 60 percent over the last 10 years.

Switzerland loves champagne

In the overall global ranking, Switzerland ranks eighth in terms of the number of bottles and the total value of champagne sold. Even more Robes are only served in the US, UK, Japan, Germany, Italy, Australia and Belgium. If you calculate these values by population, Switzerland is even ahead.

Also, one in five champagne bottles sold in Switzerland in 2022 was the Cuvée de Prestige, representing the highest and most expensive quality level for champagne. Rosé champagne is also gaining popularity and now accounts for more than ten percent of total sales. So when it comes to champagne, Switzerland is definitely not out of the water.
