After the postponement of “Avatar” and “Avengers”: Disney finally announces the theatrical release of the new “Alien” movie

With “Evil Dead” and “Don’t Breathe”, an extraordinary sense of atmosphere and nerve-racking suspense sequences allowed Fede Alvarez to become one of the most interesting genre directors in recent history. After his 2018 film adaptation of the novel “Conspiracy” failed to receive critical acclaim, the Uruguayan filmmaker took a few years off from directing – only to secure the director’s chair for the new “Alien” movie.

The latest entry in the iconic sci-fi horror franchise will be released in North American theaters on August 16, 2024, as part of a Disney-sponsored theatrical reorganization (read more here and here). Since new theatrical releases in Germany usually appear on Thursdays, the new “Alien” installment will probably start in cinemas in Germany on August 15, 2024. That is of course not yet certain, but you can assume for the time being.

This is “Alien” by Fede Alvarez

While “Alien” director Ridley Scott is involved as producer, Cailee Spaeny (“Mare Of Easttown”), Isabela Merced (“Transformers 5: The Last Knight”), David Jonsson (“Rye Lane”), Spike Fearn (“The Batman”), Aileen Wu (“Away From Home”) and Archie Renaux (“Shadow And Bone”).

The new Alien movie, currently titled Alien: Romulus, would be a standalone work set in the Alien universe, but independent of the events of the previous films to tell its own story. So it will not be a sequel to the “Prometheus” saga. The title also gives rise to speculation.

It is not yet clear what the film is about. However, the first plot details have recently been published and give the impression that Fede Alvarez may re-enact his horror experiences (and possibly in a correspondingly gory way). It would be about a group of young people on a distant planet who are confronted by the most terrifying life form in the universe: the xenomorph.
