According to the WWF, there is a lot of plastic waste floating in the Mediterranean. Microplastics are particularly problematic.

at home
- Repair broken items yourself or have them repaired instead of buying new ones. One repair can save up to 24 kilograms of CO2. In addition to workshops, contact points are also repair cafes.
- Opt for real vintage stuff, i.e. second hand – doubly protect the environment and climate by avoiding waste and continuing to use resources. This works great at a lot of currency markets, flea markets, and thrift shops. Or give things you no longer need to friends and acquaintances.
- Keeping your home clean with just a few household items instead of lots of specialized cleaners saves on packaging and the crude oil found in many conventional detergents and cleaners.
- Dry the laundry in the line instead of the dryer. In this way, some moisture enters the apartment and energy costs are saved.
- Borrow rarely used items instead of buying them. You can also rent furniture.
- Save energy with less waiting. Instead of always unplugging, you can easily disconnect devices from the network with a radio adapter plug.
- Do not heat in winter or summer. One degree cooler room temperature can save six percent on heating costs and associated CO2 emissions. And open the windows for quick ventilation. This saves on heating costs compared to a slanted window and also reduces CO2 emissions. Mold formation is also prevented.
during the meal
- Choose reusable rather than disposable. Products in reusable containers such as mineral water, juices and yoghurts with short shipping routes are particularly environmentally friendly.
- Buy with as little or no packaging as possible – it saves both packaging production and disposal energy.
- Prefer regional products instead of products from abroad. That’s because transportation accounts for a large part of the CO2 footprint of food. These can be greatly reduced by purchasing regional foods.
- Choose seasonal products instead of stocked products. A local apple in the fall is more climate-friendly than a warehouse apple in midsummer. After all, apples must be stored energy-intensive.
- Consume more unprocessed foods instead of processed foods. Finally, additional energy is required for industrial production, transportation and packaging.
with pleasure
- Go for a run or walk instead of the treadmill at the gym. In both places, calories are lost. But a well-lit and heated gym uses energy. You can also sunbathe outside.
- For the benefit of the environment and for your own relaxation, it is better to take a long, long-haul trip by plane than many small short trips. Or better yet, travel by train.
In the garden
- Buy potting soil without peat. Or, of course, compost your own potting soil. Swamps, which are among the most effective CO2 stores, are destroyed for peat extraction.
