Inflation in the Netherlands was 16.8 percent in October. This comes from figures from Statistics Netherlands, which are based on the European calculation method.

This means that prices in October were on average 16.8 percent more expensive than in October of the previous year. This is slightly lower than in September, when inflation was a record 17.1 percent.

Groceries have become more expensive in October than in September. On average, groceries were 11.5 percent more expensive in October than in the previous year. In September it was 10.5 percent.

Energy, including fuels, was 99.8 percent more expensive in October than it was in October last year, or twice as expensive. In September, the annual price increase was 113.8 percent.

Other calculation method

When calculating inflation, Statistics Netherlands takes into account the prices of new energy contracts, not the prices people actually pay. In many cases, people will spend less on energy than is measured by Statistics Netherlands because, for example, they still have a permanent contract at lower prices. Also, the prices for variable energy contracts are not always as high as for a completely new energy contract.

Statistics Netherlands is working on a method to measure energy price increases in a different way. According to this new method, inflation would be slightly lower than what Statistics Netherlands currently measures. Today, Statistics Netherlands provides more detailed information about the consequences.

In August, for example, Statistics Netherlands measured an inflation rate of 12 percent. With the new method, that would have been between 7.5 and 9.6, the statisticians report.

Statistics Netherlands is still working on this new method. In January, CBS expects more information on when they will start measuring in this different way.
