FAO discusses the transformation of agri-food systems

The Regional Office of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations for Latin America and the Caribbean (FAO) held a round of consultations with non-governmental actors as a prelude to the 38th regional conference of the organization LARC38, where state ministers and high-ranking officials will discuss challenges and priorities related to food and agriculture.

Officials of the Organization and representatives of the private, scientific and academic sectors and civil society discussed and contributed to the FAO work plan for the next two-year period (2024-2025).

These suggestions and experiences related to food and agriculture will serve as input for personal consultation and declaration.

The 38th regional conference is a space for dialogue and technical and political discussions at the highest level on the progress and challenges of Latin America and the Caribbean in the fight against hunger and malnutrition.

An average of 600 participants in each consultation followed the sessions via YouTube, X and Zoom. In addition, the FAO Regional Office in Santiago de Chile personally received members from all sectors.

He FAO Deputy Director General and Regional Representative for Latin America and the Caribbean, Mario Lubetkinhe thanked for the great participation that was recorded in the different days of the previous consultations and emphasized the importance of these inputs for the discussion that will be held on April 11 at the Regional Conference.

“It is essential for FAO to work more and better with civil society as a strategic partner of our cooperation, in coordination with governments and with the participation of other sectors, in order to move towards broader and more diverse governance,” said Lubetkin. who added at the end of the meeting: through these consultations, we want to contribute to giving greater visibility and highlighting civil society initiatives, which enable us to identify more innovative actions, with scientific evidence, but also with the knowledge of the ancestors of indigenous peoples, women, young people and all actors connected with agricultural food sector and rural development.”

The FAO Regional Conference is an official forum where ministers of agriculture and senior officials of Member States in the region meet to discuss challenges and priority issues related to food and agriculture – with the aim of promoting regional coherence in policy issues of a global nature.

The regional conference will synthesize FAO’s lines of work under four regional priorities: Efficient, inclusive and sustainable production; End hunger and achieve food and nutrition security; sustainable management of natural resources and adaptation to climate change irreducing inequality, poverty and promoting resilience.
