Eastern US ports are losing due to canal drought

Freight is shipped to the West Coast of the United States before the East Coast, as an alternative reducing traffic in the Panama Canalreported Transport Intelligence, cited by the website Maritime world.

However a decline in logistics activity is evident considering the situation that the interoceanic waterway is passing through.

For example, East Coast ports have reduced the total amount of containers moved, e.g that of Georgia, which fell 10% year-on-year in Novemberwhich confirms the trend during the quarter.

Just the opposite, The Port of Los Angeles increased its volume by 19.4% since Novemberwhile import and export of containers increased in the quarter.

In the case of the port of Georgia, there is hope that the situation will change, because increase in traffic in the Panama Canal in the month of Januarygiven the increase in rain in the last weeks of 2023.

The Maritime World warns against this Eastern US ports emerged as an alternativeinvesting heavily in new infrastructure.

However, its market position will be weakened if Panama Canal capacity remains limited or unpredictable.

This fact, added to what is happening in the Middle East with attacks on commercial vessels, leads to the need to build flexibility into logistics provisionaccording to Transport Intelligence.

“The challenge for any commercial economy is to build options into the system, something that is perfectly possible, especially through use intermodal solutions“, said Transport Intelligence.
