How 20 years ago Chulpan Khamatova talked about working abroad Stars

In the early 2000s, Chulpan Khamatova began to work a lot in Germany: the actress starred in films and played in the theater.

Her most famous project was the film Goodbye, Lenine, which was released in 2003. Her partner in the film was the German actor Daniel Brühl. In the film, Chulpan played nurse Lara, who works in the hospital where the main character’s mother goes.

The Russian press immediately began to write that Chamatova would make a career in the West and stop acting with Russian directors. There were reasons for the rumors of emigration: in addition to work, the actress was also drawn to Germany by love. Then she just started an affair with the dancer Alexei Dubinin, who was a soloist at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin. Passion quickly flared up between them: at the time of their acquaintance, both were married, and Chulpan had just given birth to a daughter to her husband, Ivan Volkov. Khamatova soon divorced him, but Dubinin did not officially end his marriage, although he was in a relationship with the actress for several years, and she called him her husband.

When she talked about her work in Germany, Chulpan was rather reserved and did not show that she was fascinated by life abroad. For example, she reproached German directors for being late, although it is generally accepted that the representatives of this nation are punctual.

In an interview with the Izvestiya newspaper, the actress also complained that Russian actors in Europe are underpaid.

“German producers are trying to save money on Russian actors. My agent in Germany fights and convinces that Russian actors are on the same level as German ones and earn decent money for a long time, “she admitted.

In addition, in the same interview, Khamatova said that she was not going to give up everything for the sake of working in Europe.

“Making a career in the West is not my goal. It takes massive acts of self-degradation to break through, which I don’t want. Moreover, we are foreigners in the West,” she said at the time.

As a result, Khamatova changed her mind, but whether she will succeed is still an open question.
