Road tolls cost working Dutch people a lot of money

Road tolls cost working Dutch people a lot of money

The CNV fears that road tolls could put a heavy strain on working Dutch people’s wallets. The upcoming government measure, which is expected to come into force in 2030, could cost millions of people hundreds of euros a month, according to the union’s calculations.

Although the CNV is aware of the need to reduce CO2 emissions, it believes that workers should not bear the burden of this measure. This point of view was taken by CNV President Piet Fortuin.

It is still unclear what the exact cost of road user charges is

It is still unclear what the road user fees will cost. According to CNV, the full bill will be presented soon. However, this can take a long time in practice.

The union estimates that if a road tax is introduced, owners of an average car will soon have to pay around €300 more per month in fuel costs. The union adds: “The higher the cabinet’s carbon ambition, the more workers will pay extra.”

An additional tax-free mileage allowance

For this reason, the CNV is in favor of employees being compensated in the form of an additional tax-free subsidy. That means an amount of about 30 cents per kilometer. This amount is then paid by the employer. Only time will tell how the government will deal with the concerns of the union and working Dutch people. For the time being, little is known about the plans for the road user fee.

Road tolls seem very fair, but in practice this turns out not to be the case. In this article, we explain why road tolls seem fair but aren’t fair.
