That’s why the new Polestar 4 doesn’t have a rear window

The new Polestar 4 surprises with its design. Because why does the model not have a rear window and the driver has to look at the following traffic through a camera? Polestar explains Autovisie.

The Polestar 4 press release is vague about the lack of a rear window. The brand wants to offer a better experience for the passengers in the second row.

Polestar 4 without rear window for technical reasons

In fact, for technical reasons, the Polestar 4 doesn’t have glass between the D-pillars. A Swedish Polestar executive at the Shanghai Motor Show tells Autovisie.

“We wanted to give the 4 Series a sporty silhouette with a lower roof and a sloping windshield. So we faced a dilemma: the roofline could not be raised, but headroom for the rear passengers had to be guaranteed.”

The rear window is getting small, so remove it

“This meant that part of the roll cage, the crash structure, could not be placed in the traditional location as it would otherwise limit rear space. The reinforcement is now further back and lower so visibility through a rear window would be limited.”

“Then we thought: ‘If we’re going to create a kind of mailbox that forces the driver to look behind, why not remove the rear window completely.’

No claustrophobia in the rear of the Polestar 4

Polestar 4’s rear view mirror is both a traditional mirror – for viewing the rear passengers – and a screen showing images from the rear camera. The camera is located just under the roof, so Polestar says it never gets dirty.

So that it does not become claustrophobic for the rear passengers, the black plastic behind the back is illuminated. The large, continuous panoramic window from the front to the rear also contributes to the openness in the cabin.
