Gasoline cars banned? They will still be selling these brands after 2035!

Last week, the news broke that the internal combustion engine would be banned once and for all from 2035. However, there are exceptions. With some brands you can still buy a car with a petrol engine after 2035.

The ban from 2035 means that no new fossil-fuelled cars can be sold. Buying a combustion engine car from brands like BMW, Toyota and Ford will no longer be possible.

Petrol engines for small car brands not prohibited

Still, there are brands you can still buy petrol-powered (or possibly diesel-powered) cars from after 2035. This emerges from a statement by the EU.

The exception applies to small automakers that build fewer than 1,000 cars per year. This is good news for the small unique brands.

Donkervoort can survive with petrol engines

For example, the Dutch brand Donkervoort can continue to exist under these rules with cars that enthusiasts want. So you can continue to enjoy the spartan driving in gasoline cars that are only focused on the driving experience. In the video below, Autovisie editor Dries van den Elzen takes you in such a Donkervoort with a noisy petrol engine!

A “transitional arrangement” applies to brands such as Ferrari, Lamborghini and McLaren, which produce between 1,000 and 10,000 cars a year. Automakers are exempt from interim emission reductions, but only have to sell zero-emission cars until 2035. The same applies to manufacturers of vans. However, they register up to 22,000 vehicles in the special regulation. After 2035 they are no longer allowed to sell petrol cars and therefore only have to offer electric or hydrogen cars.

“Zero emissions” is of course not quite the right term. The production of electric cars or cars that run on hydrogen also causes CO2 emissions. In any case, manufacturers are no longer allowed to build (gasoline) cars whose exhaust produces combustion gases. No more Ferrari with V12!
