Fired again! There are only a few employees left at VDL Nedcar

From November around 1,300 people will lose their jobs at VDL Nedcar in Born. But that is not all. Another two thousand employees will have to leave in March.

The problem for VDL Nedcar began in 2020 when BMW announced that it would stop producing Minis in the Netherlands. So they had to look for a new customer in Born.

VDL Nedcar contract with BMW

It turns out that finding one isn’t easy. A month ago, Nedcar announced that it had signed another contract with BMW. Not for building cars, but for battery modules.

VDL Nedcar will produce 125,000 by 2035. However, this does not mean that the search for new customers is over. The battery deal only fills 10 percent of the capacity in Born.

It’s not like thousands of employees are needed. Ultimately, only a few dozen will be involved in battery assembly. Therefore the 1,300 were released.

Two thousand additional layoffs

However, it has now been announced that another two thousand will be added in March. More than three thousand people lose their jobs. Next year only 450 jobs will remain.

VDL Nedcar says it is still negotiating with a number of other car and bus manufacturers about also producing batteries for them. The last new Mini will roll off the production line in Born in March next year.
