You can buy this affordable electric sports car for the money of a Golf

Electric cars are generally expensive, especially if you want something sporty, right? Not if the Chinese start-up SSC has its way. They want to build an electric sports car for the money of a Volkswagen Golf.

If you’re looking for an affordable, sporty electric car, options are limited. You can turn to MG for the 4 (or 4 Xpower) or Cupra for the Born, but these aren’t really (affordable) sports cars. MG has already introduced the Cyberster, but this car is not a light sports car.

An affordable electric sports car

The Chinese start-up is called SSC, not to be confused with SSC Tuatara. The name stands for SShopping center sports car. The brand is now showing photos of the production-ready SC-01.

According to a Chinese patent office, the affordable electric sports car has two electric motors that together produce 435 hp. The powertrain enables acceleration from zero to one hundred in 3.9 seconds.

The company has not yet provided any information about the size of the battery pack. According to the NEDC measurement method, around 500 kilometers can be covered with one battery charge. If we compare that with WLTP, you can quickly expect 100 kilometers less.

Not a bad range, especially when you know the weight of this car. The car has a curb weight of 1300 kilograms! Will this be the first lighter electric sports car?

Buying a Golf for that money is not yet an option

The plans are promising for car enthusiasts, but we don’t expect to drive the car for much longer. The brand hasn’t even communicated when it plans to introduce the affordable electric sports car in China, let alone in Europe.

Nevertheless, it is an interesting model. Especially because it costs the same as a Volkswagen Golf with the R-Line package. The model is said to cost 300,000 Chinese renminbi in China, i.e. just under 39,000 euros. Due to Dutch VAT, you can of course add something if the electric vehicle comes to the Netherlands.
