Almost all Dutch petrol drivers do not want an electric car

The proportion of electric vehicles is increasing. Still, the control advantages, quick acceleration and smooth powertrains may not convince everyone. In fact, almost all petrol drivers in the Netherlands do not want an electric car.

The car sales sites Spadaaal.nl and AutoTrack conducted a survey among 2,000 petrol drivers. The conclusion of the study is amazing, to say the least.

Gasoline drivers do not want electric cars

Of the 2,000 petrol drivers surveyed in the Netherlands, 96 percent (!) state that they do not intend to buy an electric car. And it’s not just about the driving characteristics or the sound, most Dutch people don’t drive a roaring V8 every day, but above all the battery condition and the range are aspects that concern the Dutch petrol driver.

Renault Scenic, MPV, SUV

The survey shows that 37 percent of petrol drivers are concerned about the condition of the battery and 25 percent about the limited range. More than half of those surveyed have not yet invested in an electric car because the asking price is too high. Residual value is also a big problem.

Share of electric cars

The share of electric vehicles in the Dutch fleet is still growing, although it seems to be declining slightly at the moment. Significantly fewer subsidies for electric cars were applied for this year and the trade in electric cars is stagnating, as Gaspeadal.nl confirms. Fewer plug-in cars were sold in the first half of 2023 than in the same period last year (-2 percent).

The plan to also levy a vehicle tax on electric cars from 2026 could play an important role in this. You can read about how much tax you have to pay here. In 2026, too, the addition will increase.

It remains to be seen whether the proportion of electric vehicles in the Netherlands will continue to increase. According to the study, the average petrol driver is not yet waiting for a plug-in car.
