The five best tips for saving fuel

The current price is a reason to drive more sparingly. You then not only spend less money on fuel. With these five you also put less strain on the environment.

1. Do not drive short distances

The first tip is simple: just grab the bike more often. This saves fuel and emits fewer pollutants while driving. This is a good option, especially for short trips. Because an engine consumes more fuel if the fluids and components are not yet at operating temperature.
If this is not possible and the train or bus is canceled again, use the following tips to save fuel.

2. Adjust your driving style to save gas

Your driving style has a major impact on your fuel consumption. It is most economical to drive on the highway at a constant speed. It is important that the speed is not too high. 80 km/h are more economical than 100 km/h. At 130 km/h, consumption increases significantly.

Try to anticipate traffic well. If you take your foot off the gas pedal in good time and brake with the engine, modern cars do not consume any fuel. Anyone who brakes a lot and accelerates as a result uses significantly more petrol or diesel.
The lower your RPM, the less fuel you use. So tune in as soon as possible. This is between 1500 and 2000 rpm for a diesel engine and between 2000 and 2500 rpm for a petrol engine.

3. Opt for less comfort

Windows open, air conditioning on and sunroof open. Driving in summer can be so much fun. However, if you are not planning a nice trip and want to drive as economically as possible, it is better not to use this luxury.
With the sunroof open, you can quickly consume 0.2 liters more per 100 kilometers. The air conditioning also ensures higher consumption. If you have to choose between leaving the window open and the air conditioning on, it’s best to leave the window closed. If you don’t need the air conditioner, you’d better turn it off.

4. Scheduling

A lot of fuel is consumed when accelerating and braking. Standing still in a traffic jam also causes stationary fuel consumption – unless your car is equipped with a start-stop system.

If you want to use as little petrol or diesel as possible, avoid traffic jams and plan the most efficient route possible. Many navigation systems have an option that allows you to automatically drive the “greenest” route.

5. Technical

There is a lot to be gained in the technical field if you want to save fuel. First of all, it is important that your car has been well maintained. This prevents problems that can lead to higher fuel consumption. The tire pressure plays a major role in this. Inflate your tires at least every 2 months. This ensures lower rolling resistance and therefore lower fuel consumption.
Don’t forget to remove the roof box or roof rack from your car after your vacation. These items on your car cause more drag and high fuel consumption. Don’t leave your vacation things in the car either. Weight has to be moved and costs fuel.

If you drive a newer car, you might be able to put it in an ECO mode. In this mode, you often only have limited power available and the car drives as economically as possible. With all the tips, don’t forget that safety comes first. Extremely slow acceleration isn’t a viable option with cars behind, and it doesn’t even result in significantly better fuel economy.
