Used cars are suddenly falling in price and electric vehicles are proving to be even less popular

Not only new cars, but also used cars have become outrageously expensive lately. Therefore, it is noteworthy that the average price of used cars has suddenly dropped sharply.

According to sales sites Gaspeadal.nl, Autowereld and AutoTrack, the average price at which used cars are offered last month was 23,199 euros. Used car prices haven’t been that low this year.

Opportunities over 800 euros cheaper

In May, the average price for used cars was 24,005 euros; a drop of more than 800 euros in one month. The sales pages also keep track of the average price that used buyers enter in their searches. This rose slightly: from 19,658 euros in May to 19,742 euros in June. Since August of last year, the difference between the search price and the asking price of used cars hasn’t been that small.

The figures also show that used cars with diesel engines are still on the rise. While 8.9 percent of used buyers were still looking for a diesel in May, the figure was as high as 9.6 percent in June. Meanwhile, the popularity of electric cars continues to decline. In May, just 8.2 percent of car buyers were looking for a used electric vehicle, and last month that percentage dropped further to just 6.9 percent.

Hatchback more popular than station wagon

There are other factors that are examined each month. Think of the most popular paint colors on used cars (you can read about them here), but also the most popular body types. For months the estate dominated, but in March of this year it was dethroned by the hatchback. The station wagon made a comeback last month, only to lose it again to the hatchback in June. In June, 23 percent of those interested in used cars were looking for a hatchback and 22.7 percent for a station wagon. What is not an exciting fight is the one about the gearbox: In June, more than 80 percent of the car investigators were looking for used cars with automatic gearboxes. The manual transmission is passé.
