Meyer’s Manx

With this beach buggy, for example the Meyers Manx, it could have worked out well. It was developed in the 1960s by Californian engineer, surfer and boat builder Bruce Meyers, who passed away in 2021 at the age of 94.

The Meyers Manx is based on a shortened Volkswagen Beetle chassis and therefore has the engine at the rear. The modest four-cylinder boxer is not particularly powerful, but it hardly has to move any weight, around 540 kilos.

Fiat 600 Jolly

Wealthy people should have a car to take to their superyacht, thought Fiat in the 1950s. That’s why the Italian manufacturer had Carrozzeria Ghia convert its popular 600 model into this creation: the Fiat 600 Jolly, with wicker seats and a cute fabric roof.

The Jolly was nearly twice the price of a regular 600, but the beach wagon was still in high demand. Actress Grace Kelly, Fiat boss Gianni Agnelli and sheep magnate Aristotle Onassis, among others, had one.

Citroen Méhari

It can hardly be simpler than the Citroën Méhari. The small off-roader – of which more than 144,000 examples were made between 1968 and 1988 – stands on the chassis of the Duck and has a plastic body.

The French Army bought more than 7000 Méharis. Citroën introduced a four-wheel drive version of its humble SUV in 1979 that cost twice as much as front-wheel drive.
