Two Israeli soldiers and a woman were killed in an armed attack on the Egyptian border on Saturday. The two were fatally wounded by gunfire at the border, the Israeli army said. The attacker was an Egyptian police officer, the Israeli army said.
Israel and Egypt signed a peace treaty in 1979. Yet there have been several deadly attacks in the past by militant groups on the border between the two countries.
A bus bombing in the resort town of Taba on the border with Israel in 2014 killed three tourists from South Korea and the Egyptian bus driver.
A devastating attack on a military checkpoint on the Sinai Peninsula in August 2012 left 16 Egyptian soldiers dead. The attackers then attempted to breach the nearby border into Israel with two captured military vehicles. They were stopped by Israeli security forces. The Israeli army killed five assassins. On the Egyptian side, the bodies of three other assassins were found. (cst/sda/dpa)
