Everyone trips over a sandbag. But that shouldn’t happen to the president of the US – at least not in front of cameras on a podium. That’s exactly what Joe Biden (80) did in Colorado. This shoddy humanity is fodder for Republicans to fool Biden once more.

Biden doesn’t have it easy otherwise. His presidency has been marked by national and international catastrophes: the aftermath of the corona pandemic, a brutal war in Europe and a looming debt crisis that could plunge the United States into financial chaos.

After his punching bag mishap, he hopped across the White House lawn — proving that despite the stumbling blocks, he’s still full of energy. He does the same on a political level: he manages crises almost in the background, while in the foreground he seems too shy. Then he achieves success.

Biden scores with restraint

Biden’s political secret? His political opponents do not take him seriously. What sounds like a weakness can also be a strength. He used them to win the 2020 Democratic nomination; he used them to perform the rare feat of overthrowing a sitting president.

House of Representatives approves debt deal

During his presidency, he managed to win one bipartisan deal after another: a mega package to modernize the country’s infrastructure. Billions of dollars in support for Ukraine. His latest coup: the deal in the US debt dispute.

All this was only possible because the Republicans do not respect him enough and can sometimes give him a victory. But: the German magazine “Spiegel” recently called Biden the “most successful American president in years”.

An opportunity that was denied to his predecessors Donald Trump (74) and Barack Obama (61). Trump acted like a bulldozer and ignored the opposition. Obama was too powerful and the Republicans did not want to give him an extra victory.

The American people are not grateful to him

However, with his domestic and foreign policy successes, Biden has been flying under the radar of voters. According to recent figures from “Fivethirtyeight” – a project that summarizes research results – 55 percent of Americans don’t like him.

The US debt dispute threatens a global crisis

The Washington Post recently ran the headline, “Estimate Biden at Your Peril.” And should be right about that. Biden is not too old, not too unsuccessful or too toothless for a second term. The oldest president in American history is simply underestimated. And that is his political superpower.
