Assisted Fertilization: Surprising Figures in Uruguay

Uruguay assisted fertilization techniques registered 2,099 live births, according to data presented this Friday by the National Resources Fund (FNR) as part of the opening of Fertility Week.

According to the report presented, the FNR has recorded 1,799 births since approval Law on Assisted Fertilization -which celebrates a decade this year – 16.8 were multiple pregnancies, which gives a total of 2,099 live births.

In addition, it was pointed out that 6.4 women out of every 1000 use these techniques in Uruguay.

In this sense, the representative in Uruguay Society for Human Reproduction (SURH), Virginia Chaquiriand, He pointed out that “we must not forget” that infertility affects “many couples” and pointed out the improvement in the birth rate in Uruguay, which is “in decline”.

Despite the results of the FNR, Chaquiriand emphasized that the fund offers fertility treatment benefits with co-payments.

“Strikes are still a barrier to access for many people, especially when they have to try several times, unfortunately no reproductive treatment has a 100% success rate,” said the doctor.

For his part, he The Deputy Minister of Public Health of Uruguay, José Luis Satdjian, He told reporters that the country faces the challenge of improving access to treatment, both economically and geographically, since, as he explained, the highest percentage of use of these techniques is in the metropolitan area.

“Without a doubt, the challenge is to continue working to reduce the barriers, because what the country needs is an increase in the birth rate, and fertility treatments are a very favorable input and tool for those families to be able to have them here,” he said.

Fertility Week will last until June 9, and SURH will organize live and virtual activities with free access.

The program of activities includes talks with health professionals, as well as a “tribute to the pioneers of reproductive medicine in Uruguay”.
