Fireworks, masked faces, insults – when the demonstration on Thursday before World Children’s Day in Berlin became confusing, there were police checks. But then left-wing politician Juliane Nagel (43) was also handcuffed when she observed what she considered to be an unfair police check. When told she was a politician, one of the officers replied, “We don’t give a fuck!” Both the Minister of the Interior and Chief of Police René Demmler (51) apologized to Nagel shortly afterwards, the “Bild” writes on Friday.
The videos of the arrest sparked outrage on social media. The prosecutor is investigating the case. Nagel became involved in a police action and, according to a spokesman, “hit one of the officers with his hand”. She denies that.
“Exaggerated and Escalating”
The demonstration for World Children’s Day or “Youth Day” was recorded and conducted by Member of Parliament Nagel. 170 people were present. It was over around 8pm – but then things suddenly got confusing. The police carried out checks. When Nagel saw a dark-skinned boy handcuffed directly in front of the identity check, Nagel intervened.
Even during the demonstration, the police were present en masse. “That was extremely exaggerated and escalating, hardly anything was noticed about the demonstration itself,” Nagel looks back. “You get the feeling that the situation is escalating and you look for reasons to escalate it,” says green politician Jürgen Kasek (42).
