It is not yet known whether it is actually the missing person, says the prosecutor of the state of Jalisco on Facebook on Wednesday evening (local time). Body parts of both women and men were found – how many people they belonged to has yet to be investigated.

A first plastic bag was found on a 40-meter deep slope north of the metropolis of Guadalajara on Tuesday. As the area is difficult to access, salvage work would continue in the coming days, it said.

Since last week, a search has been underway for two women and five men who worked in a call center in Zapopan, the neighboring city of Guadalajara. It is not yet clear why they disappeared. The public prosecutor’s office announced that the search for the missing persons will continue as long as the identity of the dead in the plastic bags is not clarified.

Mexico has been suffering from a wave of violence for years. Numerous drug cartels and other criminal groups vie for control of areas of influence, smuggling routes and protection money. They often have ties to corrupt politicians and security forces. Last year, nearly 32,000 murders were registered in the Latin American country with a population of about 126 million. (oee/sda/dpa)
