Italy has given Switzerland the prospect of lifting the blockade on refugee returns. However, it must first expand accommodation capacity, as Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said during a meeting with Federal Councilor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider.
Justice Minister Baume-Schneider met Piantedosi on Wednesday during a working visit to Rome. As the Federal Ministry of Justice and Police (FDJP) later announced, Baume-Schneider expressed understanding for the difficult migration situation in Italy.
However, she pointed out that the unilateral suspension of Italy’s readmission of asylum seekers since December 2022 poses “a delicate political challenge”. This weakens the Dublin system and European asylum policy. Applicable law must be observed.
According to the FDJP, Interior Minister Piantedosi said Italy is working to increase accommodation capacity. Depending on the situation, it could take back refugees under Dublin rules in the coming months. (aeg/sda)
