According to their own statements, the Russian partisan group “Legion Freedom for Russia” is recruiting fighters for a storming of Moscow. A fighter nicknamed “Caesar” told the British newspaper The Times that there are “thousands” of volunteers willing to join the Legion. They will continue to attack Russian areas on the border with Ukraine until they have enough troops to storm the Russian capital.
A week ago, fighters from the Freedom for Russia Legion attacked several locations in Western Russia’s Belgorod region and proclaimed a “People’s Republic of Belgorod.” The Russian army seemed surprised and took more than a day to push back the relatively small group of fighters. Eventually, the legion retreated to Ukrainian soil, killing several attackers, according to Russian sources.
The Legion apparently has no plans to stop: “We have mortars, armored vehicles, Stinger missiles, portable anti-tank systems and a very effective reconnaissance drone unit,” Caesar told the Times. Currently, the legion is the size of a battalion (usually between 500 and 1,000 soldiers). But growth will come once the Russians understand that they can fight the dictator Vladimir Putin.
The Legion will therefore continue its attacks on Russia “until we have our own piece of Russian territory”. Then “real Russian sons and daughters, real patriots” would join the legion.
Main objective «Defense of Ukraine»
“Caesar” went on to say that all members of his legion are Russian citizens who served in the Ukrainian armed forces: “We are not a gang of criminals or a private military company like Wagner. We fight within the structure of the Ukrainian armed forces.” The main goal is “the defense of Ukraine” and the liberation of its territories. After that, the Legion will liberate their Russian homeland.
The incursions into Russian territory are intended to support Ukraine’s planned counter-offensive, Caesar said in the Times report. They also served as a recruiting campaign “to encourage the Russians to overthrow Putin before the war comes to them”.
According to a Legion spokesperson, the group is simply waiting for the right time to strike. This will be the case once the Ukrainian army liberates Crimea: “Putin’s political system will be paralyzed by the defeat in Crimea. Now is the time to deal a crushing blow to Moscow.”
