When the sunken houseboat was rescued from a depth of 15 meters, new, heartbreaking but also mysterious details emerged on Wednesday. On Whit Sunday, a chartered houseboat on the Italian side of Lake Maggiore was caught by heavy hail and thunder and capsized. Four of the 24 people on board drowned. Now the prosecutor must clarify how this tragedy could have happened.
The target is Claudio C.*(60), the boat owner and captain. If only his boat was approved for a maximum of 15 people and therefore overloaded? Perhaps the skipper had not taken the weather forecast seriously enough? And did he know about the mysterious “birthday party”?
The Russian Anna B. was afraid to die
With the recovery of the bodies, the names of the dead are also known. They are the Italians Claudio A.* († 62) and Tiziana B.* († 53) and the Israeli Shimoni E.* († 54). All three were secret agents. The captain’s wife, who was born in Russia, also died. The day after the drama, ten of the survivors were flown to Tel Aviv by military plane, reports La Repubblica. Apparently, the body of Shimoni E., a former employee of the Israeli secret service Mossad, was also on board.
The captain lost everything that fateful night. His wife Anna B.* († 50), the boat on which the two lived, his existence. “In just 30 seconds, the boat turned on its own axis,” Claudio C. tells another friend after the drama, “I thought I was trapped, but then I came back to the surface of the water.” However, his Anna did not make it. Varesenews reported on these statements.
Anna B. could not swim. When the storm hit, she was still on the phone with her sister, who stayed ashore in Sesto Calende (I). “I’m afraid of dying,” were Anna B.’s last words, “I can only pray.” Then the line broke. From that moment on, the sister no longer reached Anna B..
The Public Prosecution Service is investigating involuntary manslaughter
In view of the gathering dark clouds, the captain inquired at the weather station and was assured that the good weather would continue for a while. A misleading prognosis. Shortly afterwards, a hailstorm broke out, followed by torrential downpours.
Claudio C. cried all the time, the best friend reports to Varesenews. He found shelter with a friend. “He takes sedatives,” continues the entrepreneur. The investigations will show what else the unfortunate captain can expect. The prosecutor’s office currently charges him with negligent homicide and causing a shipwreck.
