Production of the Marlboro cigarette brand is likely to be discontinued in the medium term. According to media reports, the American tobacco company Philip Morris plans to withdraw from the classic chimney business.
“We will get out of the cigarette business and offer only reduced-risk products,” Austria-German boss Markus Essing said at an event in Berlin, as reported by “Welt”. A specific timetable was not given.
A statement from the company to APA news agency on Wednesday said the withdrawal from the tobacco trade could take place around the world in 10 to 15 years. However, this will probably not happen simultaneously in the different countries.
According to media reports, Philip Morris will in the future only offer tobacco warmers and electronic cigarettes that contain less harmful substances than conventional tobacco products. (sda/apa)
