Two columns of smoke could be seen far above Moscow on Tuesday morning. According to Russian sources, the cause was a drone attack. The residents of the Russian capital watched in amazement as eight flying objects zoomed through the sky above the posh Moscow suburb of Rublevka.
“At dawn this morning, a drone strike caused minor damage to several buildings,” Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, 64, told the Telegram online service afterwards. “No one has been seriously injured so far.”
It is still unclear who is behind the attack. Blick explains which scenario is how likely it is.
Why was Rublevka targeted?
In the Rich Quarter is a residence of Russian President Vladimir Putin (70). The message, no matter who it comes from, is clear: Putin, we are very close to you!
How does Russia react?
The Russian government sees the attack as an “attempted assassination” of Putin. The Kremlin blamed Ukraine for the “terrorist” attack. Putin himself said that Ukraine wanted to “scare” the Russians. The drone strike is the “answer” to a Russian attack on a military intelligence headquarters in Ukraine.
What does Ukraine say?
“We are looking at it with pleasure,” says the adviser to President Volodymyr Zelensky (45), Mykhailo Podoliak (51).
At the same time, he stressed that Ukrainian leaders had nothing to do with it. “You know we are approaching the age of artificial intelligence,” he added mockingly. “Maybe not all drones are ready to attack Ukraine and want to return to their creators.”

Russia has been bombing Ukraine with drones for months. Now the country invaded by Russia may have fought back. Intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov (37) recently announced retaliatory measures. Russia would regret the attacks “very soon”.
He promised: “Our answer will not be long in coming.” The targets to the west and southwest of Moscow could well indicate a launch of the drones in Ukraine. Attacks like Tuesday’s could force the Kremlin to strengthen air defenses over Moscow at the expense of strategically important parts of the front, experts say.

German political scientist Thomas Jäger (62), in an interview with “Bild”, considers it quite possible “that Russia itself organizes these attacks with little damage, because they can be used to justify the continued attacks on civilian targets in Ukraine” .
