After Greece’s failure to form a government during parliamentary elections, new elections are scheduled for June 25. The constitutional steps for the vote were formally completed on Monday, as the parliamentary presidency announced. The new elections must take place because the results of the May 21 vote did not form a government.
The conservative Nea Dimokratia (ND) of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emerged as the clear winner from the first round with 40.8 percent. The largest opposition party, the left-wing Syriza under Alexis Tsipras, lost heavily, finishing at 20 percent. The social-democratic Pasok (11.5 percent), the Communist Party (KKE) with 7.2 percent and the right-wing populist Elliniki Lisi (Greek Solution) with 4.5 percent also passed the hurdle to enter parliament.
A grand coalition between ND and Syriza was ruled out for political reasons. The two sides are too far apart thematically and ideologically. The other parties did not agree either. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis also announced that he wanted to rule alone. (sda/dpa)
