Detectives started looking for Maddie McCann again last week.

The fate of Maddie McCann (20), who has been missing for more than 16 years, continues to stir the world. The mystery of her disappearance is still unsolved. Last week, detectives in Portugal conducted another search for the girl. Particularly chilling: The impetus for the search was apparently an eerie Maddie shrine.

A British couple is said to have stumbled upon the sanctuary near the Arade Reservoir in southern Portugal while on holiday in Portugal in 2007. The stone monument would be decorated with Maddie photos and flowers, reports the British newspaper “Daily Mail”. The pair were then able to photograph the alleged shrine before it was destroyed moments later. The police were initially not interested in the recordings.

It was only after the couple sent the photos to the German detectives that the find was still of interest to the police – 16 years after the kidnapping! Officials from Germany, Britain and Portugal combed the vast area around the lake on Tuesday. Divers were also present.

According to the British, the place of worship was shaped like an arrow. This pointed to a picnic area excavated by police this week. According to the Portuguese newspaper “Correio da Manha”, “several items of clothing” were found during the search.

“When I think about it now, I get goosebumps. Because when we saw where the police were looking in recent days, we realized that the row of stones at the shrine pointed there at the time,” said the 67-year-old Briton, who came across the shrine, to the Daily Mail.

The officials focus on Christian B.* (46). The German is said to have stayed at the reservoir several times and described it as his “little paradise”. According to press reports, investigators are convinced that the 46-year-old kidnapped and killed little Maddie. However, her body has not yet been found. (A)
