In Venice, part of the Grand Canal has turned green. Residents of the Rialto Bridge, which is popular with tourists, pointed to a “veil of bright green liquid” on the water, Veneto regional president Luca Zaia said in short message Twitter on Sunday. According to the local newspaper “La Nuova Venezia”, the police are investigating whether climate activists are behind the discoloration.
Regional president Zaia wrote on Twitter that the prefect in charge of public security had called an “emergency meeting” with police to find out the source of the liquid. According to the fire service, it is working with the environmental protection service of the Veneto region to take and examine water samples.
The Grand Canal was greened more than five decades ago. In 1968, during the Biennale art exhibition, Argentine artist Garcia Uriburu threw bright green dye into water to raise awareness about environmental protection. (kes/AFP)
