He hasn’t shaken hands for 20 years: German doctor Martin Ehlers advises everyone else to do the same.

The Corona measures are now passé. No mask, no distancing, no testing. Hands are shaken again. Just like before Corona. But that is exactly a big mistake, according to the German doctor Martin Ehlers (61). His appeal to everyone: “Stop shaking hands!” He said this in the health magazine “Apotheken Umschau”.

He’s been doing it himself for 20 years. Not for fear of contact, but for medical reasons. “You just have to reach for the doorknob and millions of viruses and bacteria will cling to your hand. Highly contagious material that can infect us. From a harmless rhinovirus, ie the classic cold virus, to aggressive flu or coronaviruses,” the doctor says to “Bild”.

The lungs are especially at risk. And Corona has shown how vulnerable the airways are. Ehlers therefore considers the abolition of the corona measures unjustified.

Close your mouth and breathe through your nose

The doctor thinks that this can prevent many infections – also apart from Corona. Our lungs are already subject to a lot of stress, such as air pollution.

Ehlers has another tip: if you’re in a confined space with a lot of people, close your mouth and breathe through your nose. This is the best way to avoid breathing in viruses and bacteria.
