WHO chief Tedros Ghebreyesus warns at the annual general meeting in Geneva of the consequences of a deadlier virus that could trigger the next pandemic.

The corona pandemic is still in people’s bones. But according to the World Health Organization (WHO), the world is facing an even worse disease.

On Tuesday, the health authority in Geneva warned of a lack of preparation for a new crisis. Because the next pandemic is definitely coming. And according to the WHO, things could get tough: The governments of all nation states should prepare for a new, potentially deadlier virus than Covid, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, 58, said at the annual general meeting, as the British reports the newspaper ‘The Independent’.

According to Ghebreyesus, there is a risk that a pathogen will emerge that causes serious illness. “The risk is undeniably there.”

Find global answers to future crises

Ghebreyesus appeals to the responsibility of nation states: “If we don’t make the necessary changes, who will?” In fact, the danger is real.

Since 2009, American scientists have discovered more than 900 types of viruses. The researchers are looking for the next pandemic virus, the possible next corona.

The WHO has long been pushing for research into a handful of specific infectious diseases. The authority classifies the Ebola, Marburg and Zika virus pathogens as the greatest threat.

Comprehensive pandemic treaty almost ratified

The 194 member states of the WHO are currently negotiating binding rules in Geneva that define their obligations and duties in the event of an international threat to health. This is intended to tackle threats in a more coordinated manner.

A first step is in the offing: a comprehensive pandemic treaty between states is about to be ratified. “A commitment from this generation to a pandemic agreement is important because they have seen how terrible a small virus can be,” said Ghebreyesus.

A few weeks ago, the WHO announced that the global health crisis surrounding Covid-19 would be lifted. The virus has claimed nearly seven million lives worldwide. (A)
