When Amanda Joy from New York found her dream sofa on a sidewalk, she took to Tiktok to share the joy of her capture. The video went viral. Within 24 hours it had been viewed more than 30 million times.
Joy, who goes by @yafavvmandaa on Tiktok, believes the blue couch is an expensive designer piece from Roche Bobois. Price: about $8,000. So the find could be a real bargain for Joy. But on social media, opinions are divided.
“What about bed bugs?”
“It was raining cats and dogs and I was on my way home when I saw this bench in the middle of the street,” says Joy in her video. “I called my dad and begged him to get it because I couldn’t just get off the couch.”
Some Internet commentators are enthusiastic about the find. But many doubt whether it is original. They also criticize the cleanliness of the find. “What about bed bugs?” it says. “It looks so good, but I’m so scared it’s a bed bug center.” Another user argued, “No one throws away an $8,000 couch for no reason.”
Cleaned with soap and steam cleaner
The blue sofa has become a true meme. Numerous netizens started posting stock photos of the blue couch with a satirical story about its origin. “A friend of mine found this $8,000 couch in an abandoned building, took it home and found it haunted,” one Twitter user wrote. “The ghost of a Victorian child got up from the sofa at 3am every night and stared blankly at him. Last week he threw the sofa onto the pavement.”
On Tiktok, Joy documents the process of cleaning with water, soap and a steam cleaner. She says she left the wet sofa to dry in her father’s office for two weeks before moving it to her apartment. (no)
