“Whoever works is stupid” – with such statements Arno Dübel gained fame in Germany more than 20 years ago. Around the turn of the millennium, the long-term unemployed struggled through all the TV talk shows, was a guest of Arabella Kiesbauer and Britt Hagedorn, spoke with Sandra Maischberger and Johannes B. Kerner.
According to his own statement, Arno Dübel has been living on social assistance with a few hundred euros a month since the end of his apprenticeship as a painter in 1976. Rent and additional costs are “paid by the office”, he always emphasized and celebrated this lifestyle. The Hamburger was dubbed “Germany’s boldest unemployed” by the press – he was definitely the most famous.
After countless television appearances and attempts to earn easy money with songs like “Der Klugere kippt nach” and “I’m nice”, Arno Dübel has been quiet in recent years. Now he would have died at the age of 67.
According to information from the “Hamburger Morgenpost”, he was admitted to the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) about two weeks ago and died there a few days later. Details about the circumstances are not known and there is no official confirmation so far. Most recently, Arno Dübel is said to have lived in a retirement and nursing home.
